Enigin - A Light Way to Save Energy

May 25th, 2010 posted by eniginenigin

A new system is in place in parts of the Highlands, Scotland for energy saving. In some areas residents are being given the power to turn on or off, street lights.

In comparison some councils in the UK are implementing energy saving schemes by doing things such as having street lights turned off completely between midnight and 5am. Clearly this second idea is a little less advisable due to there then being no articificial light for the public and therefore possibly causing problems.

At Enigin Plc we find ways to save energy and become more energy efficient, especially for businesses and councils, who are higher energy users, we all benefit from saving energy.

However, the idea in Scotland seems a very reasonable and possible solution. For example, in the Sutherland town of Golspie a new housing estate with a footpath through to the local A9 road uses this system. Those using the footpath can flick a manual switch positioned at either end. The 23 lights connected to a timer are then turned on for 15 minutes, allowing walkers to use the walkway in safety.

The Highland Council installed the system last year and say it has cut the annual running costs of £370 by between 85-90%.

Understandably this system would not necessarily work in every street or area. But I think it is an excellent use of technology and a truly innovative way of saving energy, which should be looked into by all councils.
